Research Interests
Biological Oceanography, microbial ecology, phytoplankton,
primary&bacterial production and bioaerosols.
Biography
I was born and raised in Israel. In my 3 rd year of my BSc studies in biology at Bar-Ilan
University, I took an oceanography course and basically ‘fell in love’ with the field of
marine sciences. I then continued purchasing an MSc in phytoplankton physiology and a
PhD in biological oceanography. I have two young children at the age of 5 and 2. I came
to UCSC for sabbatical last August to continue working with Adina on bioaerosols, as
well as write a children’s book in Hebrew and Arabic about the oceans.
Research
I am a biological oceanographer working at the Israel Oceanographic & Limnological
Research Institute (Haifa, Israel) since 2013. My group's main research interests lie in the
fields of Biological Oceanography, Atmospheric-Marine Processes and Microbial
Ecology. Our study involves the use of molecular and physiological approaches, stable
and radioisotopes, flow-cytometry and pigment analyses, in diverse environmental
samples such as seawater, estuaries, sediments and aerosols. As the head of the biology
department in my institute, I am also engaged in developing science youth education
programs for high school students and the public.
