Understanding and quantifying the total carbon budget of a wetland and being able to compare the relative effectiveness of preserving or restoring wetlands is an essential part of California’s climate plan. I work in the Elkhorn Slough aiming to quantify lateral carbon flux and geochemistry of surface waters. Utilizing multiple methods including water sampling, radium and radon sampling, groundwater wells and GIS I aim to create a model of how carbon and nutrients move in and out of the Slough.
